Viols on the WebRichard MilnerThere are some interesting videos of viol playing on sites such as YouTube and iTunes.On YouTube I recommend- Nima Ben David playing a solo sonata by Abel - WKO 205, also John Mark Rozendaal giving a viola da gamba lesson, and the Bach adagio in g-minor played by Joanna Blendulf and Hanneke van Proosdij. There are also quite a few videos of John Dornenburg On itunes, there are lots of CD's that can be downloaded for fee. This includes almost all of Jordi Savall's CDs, lots of Ftretwork, six Cds of Music ReCreation, four Cds from Concordia with Mark Levey, and 4 CDs of the Rose Consort with Alison Crumb. There are also lots of videos for free download from the Viols in Our Schools Project. See http://www.violsinourschools.org/, a project run by Philip Serna in the schools around Chicago, Illinois. There are lots of photos of Philip Serna playing the viol but very few of the students playing. Orpheus Music Courses - January 2009Caroline DownerThe Orpheus Music Early Chamber Summer School for 2009 is now open for registration. It is a wonderful opportunity for viol players to immerse themselves in 6 days of playing.One of the special parts of the course, is that although there is a separate viol stream, the viols are not in isolation, but are part of a much greater range of instruments - baroque oboes, recorders, violins, cellos, harpsichords (to name a few) as well as voice. There is an option to play in a chamber music setting or in the Baroque Orchestra. This week is an opportunity for an in-depth focus on one particular aspect of viol-playing. In 2009, we will be focussing on Ganassi's Regola Rubertina and Lettione Seconda. We will study this in detail and look at the division styles of Dalla Casa and Bassano. The afternoon sessions will include consort playing (all of our favourite composers - Byrd, Lawes, Frescobaldi, Ferrabosco), or chamber music (bass viols playing continuo lines). In the evening is Baroque Orchestra or informal viol playing. Once again, the viols will be divided into 3 levels - Novice, Consort and Solo Performer. Back by popular demand are our wonderful tutors Victoria Watts and Ruth Wilkinson. Orpheus Music is also running another 2 courses in January - the Orpheus Music Recorder Course and the inaugural Orpheus Music Choral Course. The Recorder Course is for players of all levels and is a 6 day programme of workshops focussing on technique, ensemble playing, one-to-a-part, solo and recorder orchestra. The Orpheus Choral Course is open to all and, under the direction of Tobias Cole, works by Handel, Schuetz, Purcell and Monteverdi will be studied. There are discounts for those who wish to attend more than one course: 15% off the registration fee of the 2nd course, 20% off the registration fee of the 3rd course.
